What do enterprising Americans do when their state interferes with their tourist economy? They secede from the union! So it was with the Mayor and many of the citizens of Key West who, in the time frame of an hour and a half, founded The Conch Republic; Seceded from the United States of America; Declared war upon the United States of America; Surrendered to the United States of America; and, Requested foriegn aid from the United States of America. The existence of The Conch Republic as a soveriegn independent nation has never been disputed by the government of the United States of America. 2. To this day, government offices of The Conch Republic are open and issuing travel passports. 3. The Conch Republic has been recognized by at least two other nations... Cuba regularly accepts travelers using passports of Conch Republic issue. And, they have an embassy in France. We have seen the Flag of the Conch Republic presented with and without the motto, "We Seceded Where Others Failed." Accordingly, we offer those two varieties here. |
